Welcome to Archives Central

Archives Central is a database for the archives of most of the local authorities in the Horizons region – Wanganui District Council, Rangitikei District Council, Manawatu District Council. Palmerston North City Council, Tararua District Council, Horowhenua District Council and Horizons Regional Council. This database is one of the outcomes of the Regional Archives Project through MW LASS Ltd (Manawatu-Wanganui Local Authority Shared Services Ltd).

Which Council's are currently searchable?

As of the 5 December 2011, the database offers comprehensive searching of lists and finding aids of the archives of Wanganui District Council, Palmerston North City Council, Horizons Regional Council, Tararua District Council, Manawatu District Council and Rangitikei District Council. Over the next seven months descriptive work on the archives of Horowhenua District Council will be carried out. This section will be updated when Horowhenua has been added.

Where do I go to see the archives?

Wanganui District Council and the Palmerston North City Council have their own archives facilities. Requests for information from these two collections need to be made to them. The other five councils will be placing their archives in a shared facility, a second outcome of the MW LASS project. This is planned to be in place by mid 2012. Before then, enquiries about the archives from Rangitikei, Manawatu, Tararua, Horowhenua and Horizons need to be directed to the relevant council.
