All requests for information from the Whanganui District Council Collection must be made to the Whanganui District Council Archives. Separate charges apply, as set by the Whanganui District Council.
The records of the Council date back to 1862 when the Wanganui Town Board was formed. In 1872 the Wanganui Borough Council was created from the Board. In turn the borough became a City Council in 1924 and in the local government reorganisation of the 1980s the City Council amalgamated with the Wanganui County Council to form the present District Council.
The WDC Collection contains the records of the Council and numerous predecessor organisations such as the County Councils, Road Boards, Town Boards and Domain Boards that operated within the current Council Boundaries from 1862-1989.

Correspondence files
Rate books and valuation rolls
Survey plans
Engineering plans
Town planning records
Electoral rolls
Photographs (including aerials)
Accounts records

The WDC collection is housed at the Infrastructure Building of the Whanganui District Council on St Hill Street. Access is by appointment only. When requesting information please ensure you have noted the reference number, title and date of the entries you are interested in, and clearly state what information you are hoping to locate. Please note that some material may be too fragile to copy.
