WW1: COUNCILS DO THEIR BIT

                         Raising Funds For Our Boys

Councils were heavily involved in fund raising efforts during the war. In some cases, they did this directly by
co-ordinating funds or parcels for the soldiers. In others cases they provided administrative support to local Patriotic Societies and similar groups who carried out this work. In many communities the people working in the Societies were the same people serving on the local council.

Patriotic Societies also supported soliders once they returned home. For some injured soldiers that support would continue for decades afterwards.

One form of fund raising were “art unions” (essentially a raffle). Not everyone in the community was keen on these though.

Here the Wanganui County suggests a change to the law and allow councils to donate 5% of their funds to provide food for the home country. The Government was already making wider provisions though, so this proposal did not go ahead.

The Mount Herbert County Council was concerned that people weren’t always doing their bit. They suggested empowering councils to levy a special patriotic rate over their communities. It found little support amongst the councils in our region.

Members of the community were keen to do their bit and provided cash directly to the patriotic funds. This cash could be straight out of their own pocket, or through fundraising events. The proceeds in this example are from the sale of the “Patriotic Pig Gaby”.Reference: TDC 00021 : 45 : 12
