History
The Manawatu Catchment Board was the first to be formed in NZ, constituted in 1943 and held its first meeting in July 1944. The Board took on the duties of Regional Water Board in 1968 due to the Water and Soil Conservation Act 1967. In 1987 the Board amalgamated with the Rangitikei Wanganui Catchment Board to form the Central Districts Catchment Board. This was not legally ratified however, so the Board continued to officially exist until 1989 when it amalgamated with a number of other authorities to form the Manawatu Wanganui Regional Council.
See record HRC 00449:6:4 for a full history of the Manawatu River and Manawatu Catchment Board.
