History

In 1894 a petition was forwarded to the Governor General requesting a Drainage District be set up in the Manawatu area. On the 18th September the Manawatu Land Drainage Board was constituted. The district was roughly triangular in shape bounded by the Manawatu River in the south and east and the Oroua River in the west. Circa 1896 the Mangaone River Board amalgamated with the Drainage Board. On the 27th June 1921 the Manawatu Land Drainage Board and the Aorangi Land Drainage Board amalgamated to form the Manawatu Drainage District.
