History

In 1920 a committee was set up by interested land owners to investigate the creation of a River Board for their area. In 1922 the Manawatu Oroua River Board was formed downstream of Palmerston North. In the 1923 the Board drew up an elaborate scheme for straightening the Manawatu River, due to financial constraints the scheme never went ahead. In 1946 the Manawatu Catchment Board proposed abolishing the River Board, which the River Board strongly disputed. The Board continued until 1953 when it was finally dissolved and all functions were fully taken over by the Catchment Board.
