The Matiere Centennial Committee was formed in recognition of the upcoming centenary of European settlement in New Zealand.

In order to recognise this the Government made funds available for centenary projects across New Zealand, although most was required to be provided by local residents.

In Matiere the populace decided on a womens Rest Rooms to mark the centenary.

After two years of fundraising the Rest Rooms were opened in 1941, and ownership was given to the local branch of the Womens Division of the Farmers Union
