History
The Rangitikei District Council was formed in 1989 as part of a wider review of local government across New Zealand. It was formed from the amalgamation of the Marton Borough Council, Taihape Borough Council and most of the Rangitikei County Council. The area around Waiouru, which was formally part of the County, was separated and amalgamated with others to the form the Ruapehu District Council.
