History

The County was proclaimed a separate entity on 20 Feb 1884 (Gazette 29 Feb 1884). The Council was concerned with the administration of 5 major acts, including the Counties Act, Rating Act, and Public Works Act. The new Council’s early priorities consisted of the building and maintenance of roads in areas which had previously been the responsibility of the Wanganui County Council (established 1876). Over the next century the Council’s functions diversified, taking into account the need for more complex forms of government. These functions included noxious weeds control, town planning, water supply, health, and other issues of local importance. The Waitotara and Wanganui County Councils were merged in 1988, forming a larger Wanganui County Council.
