History

A Provisional Committee, consisting of representatives from the Wanganui and surrounding local authorities, was set up in August 1920, to investigate the the possibility of a power supply. An electric-power district was formed following a petition of ratepayers, and the newly-constituted Power Board had its first meeting on 19 January 1922. The Board included representatives from the Rangitikei, Wanganui and Waitotara Counties, the Wanganui, Taihape and Marton Boroughs, Gonville and Castlecliff Town Districts, and a combined district of Hunterville, Bulls and Mangaweka towns. Following corporatisation, the Board’s assets were taken over by Powerco Ltd, which began business on 1 May 1993. In 1995, Powerco merged with Taranaki Energy Ltd.
