A sample of building plans (and some drainage plans) lodged with the Council by property owners when applying for a building permit. the plans cover the period from 1915 to 1994 but the bulk of the documents date from between 1925 and 1950. all of these plans have been microfilmed between 1986 and 1994 and are held by PNCC Building Services.
At the time of microfilming each plan was assigned a numerical code, which was written in black ink on a white label placed on the front of the plan. the first set of digits in this code represents the street name while the second set of digits represents the street number of the property. a key to the street name code is held in the first drawer of the series.
The criteria for selecting the sample of plans was as follows.
- All plans containing permit stamps on the reverse side, these stamps, used from about 1921 until 1950, were not microfilmed but contain information which does not appear on the front.
- All plans that are drawn in coloured inks and tinted with coloured paint (although the microfilms are only black and white).
- All 'blueprint' plans.
- All plans drawn on linen paper.
- Post 1950 plans that show a variety of architectural styles, a variety of building uses and/or unusual/distinctive styles e.g. churches, hospitals, churches, motels, shops, residences, medical centres, factories, fire station, kindergartens.
